I saw on TWC earlier this evening some video footage of a lava flow from Cumbre Vieja having reached the edge of a family's swimming pool and some of the lava going into the pool water. :o Prayers and thoughts with the residents and tourists there on the Canary Islands.

2 big quakes to report: One was near Melbourne Aussie... first one there in 50 years. It was 5.something. Then there was another one 6.7 near the coast of Nicaragua that has happened in just the past hour.

High-level eruption at Semeru volcano, ash to 15.2 km (50 000 feet) a.s.l., Indonesia

A high-level eruption took place at Semeru volcano, East Java, Indonesia at around 07:00 UTC on December 4, 2021. The Aviation Color Code was raised to Red. At least 1 person has been killed and 41 injured. The eruption comes just two days after high-level eruption at Sangay volcano, Ecuador.1

At 09:20 UTC, the ash cloud was estimated rising up to 15.2 km (50 000 feet) above sea level, according to the Darwin VAAC VA Advisory released at 09:48 UTC.2

"Volcanic ash observed on latest RGB and Visible satellite imagery moving SW of the summit. Ash seems to have detached from the summit and continues to move SW. IR temperature of -85 °C (-121 °F) obtained correspond to 15.2 km (50 000 feet) a.s.l."

Ash has completely blocked out the Sun over the area. Some users on social media are reporting fast-flowing lahars.

Authorities reported extensive damage to buildings, cars, roads, and farms.

Wow... if the ash cloud got upwards of 50,000 feet, you're talking the stratosphere I believe. Pretty amazing stuff. We won't really know if it'll have any impacts on our weather esp for the winter time months until next year.

Wow, Past history is disturbing....

A series of earthquakes hit off the coast of Oregon, U.S. on December 7 and 8, 2021. The quakes are taking place at a shallow depth of about 10 km (6.2 miles), some 500 km (320 miles) E of Salem, Oregon.

The series started with M4.2 at 13:21 UTC and continued through the morning.

By 07:36 UTC on December 8, the USGS registered 41 earthquakes (M3.4 - M5.8).
there is about a 37% chance that a megathrust earthquake of 7.1+ magnitude will happen at the boundary between the Juan de Fuca and North American plates, called the Cascadia Subduction Zone, in the next 50 years. This event will be felt throughout the Pacific Northwest.2

The Cascadia Subduction Zone is a ~1 000 km (600 miles) long fault that runs from northern California up to British Columbia and is about 100 - 160 km (70 - 100 miles) off the Pacific coast shoreline.

There have been 41 earthquakes in the last 10 000 years within this fault that have occurred as few as 190 years or as much as 1 200 years apart.

The last earthquake that occurred in this fault was on January 26, 1700, with an estimated magnitude of 9.0. This earthquake caused the coastline to drop several feet and a tsunami to form and crash into the land.

What is most surprising is that evidence for this great earthquake also came from Japan. Japanese historic records indicate that a destructive distantly-produced tsunami struck their coast on January 26, 1700. By studying the geological records and the flow of the Pacific Ocean, scientists have been able to link the tsunami in Japan with the great earthquake from the Pacific Northwest. Native American legends also support the timing of this last event.

Got to experience an earthquake today out near Ripley (OH). I was inside and there was a low rumble and the house shook for a few seconds. Nothing damaged but it was enough to get me to go up to the ridge behind the house and look for a smoke plume as I thought something exploded nearby. Got back into the city and lo and behold I read that there was a 3.0 near Manchester, OH. I didn’t honestly think of an earthquake as the source. I was about 7 miles or so from the epicenter. Kind of neat!

Today is the 210th anniversary of the first principal earthquake, M7.5, occurred at about 2:15 am (local time) in northeast Arkansas on December 16, 1811.

An interesting read of that historic period in 1811 and 1812...

It has been interesting reading about the effects of the volcano eruption in Tonga. The explosion created gravity waves in the atmosphere and the pressure wave was recorded by barometers around the world.

This was an undersea volcano too if I remember correctly yet it had massive amounts of power. It's being compared to Pinatubo in 1992 as far as the force and energy of the blast is concerned.

A major volcano has erupted in Hawaii.Mauna Loa has erupted for the first time in 4 decades and it happens to be the worlds largest active volcano. What this means to the weather patterns is something I really have never did research on but I know these are powerful. We are also really starting to try and understand ocean volcano's well below the surface and how they can affect ocean temps so the knowledge we have of the ocean is really very little in the scheme of things and makes sense because your not able to see the under ocean volcano's but only the aftermath years down the road

There have been numerous after shocks that continue in Southern Turkey. In addition, yesterday, Buffalo NY also had a minor quake.
