Surface low has stalled a bit along the SE KY / TN border starting to tighten up some more. It is getting banked up against the mountains. Air cannot go thru the Mountains it has to rise and fall. Find the path of least resistance. So the low is going to go thru the KY / TN / WV border region. That is the spine. So tough to do.

30 at CVG with 3/4 mile vis.

Gonna be one heck of a deformation band and you can see why the winter storm warnings were issued. The 700 MB frontogenic forcing is TREMENDOUS with this system.

I really don't buy the 7-8 inch amounts the NWS is talking about, but I hope I'm wrong. If the deformation band goes bonkers in the next couple of hours then maybe.

As of 6pm from the boys....a wonderful explanation of the frontogenic forcing pic I posted.

As of 6:00PM, moderate to heavy snow is being observed across the
Ohio Valley. Areas along and north of I-70 have already received at
least a few inches of snow from earlier snow bands (per reports),
while areas south of I-70 are now having snow saturate the
originally dry column. Snow has started to accumulate on area
roadways fairly efficiently and should continue to stick as
temperatures drop further below freezing while snow rates remain
heavy especially considering local climatology. An upgrade to a
Winter Storm Warning has been made for areas along and around I-70
to account for the anomalously heavy snow rates being observed, high
forecast totals, and growing travel impacts. Locations that remain
under a Winter Weather Advisory will still see a period of moderate
to heavy snow and travel impacts, but are expected to see lower snow
totals than where the warning is now in place. Winter weather
headlines will be fairly short-lived this evening as all the snow
moves east by midnight. Please use caution if traveling this evening
and be prepared for snow covered roads and low visibility.

The moderate to heavy snow rates this evening are being driven by
strong frontogenetic forcing through the DGZ that also overlaps with
deep saturation through the troposphere. All this is occurring on
the north side of a low that is quickly passing to the south. These
conditions are quiet anomalous for the region especially considering
the perfect overlap of strong frontogenetic forcing and the DGZ. Snow
will quickly taper off later this evening as the low moves further
east ending snow for locations by 10pm-12am. Please note, travel
impacts will likely linger into the late overnight since cold
temperatures will not allow for melting without road treatment.

Perfect set up to produce this storm to go along with the storm track. The overrunning moisture is overlapping the best frontogenic forcing. See the arrows? Winds blowing at 850 - 925 MB. Cool huh? This is one way to get a snow storm around here! :) A good way. There aren't many!

That band that set up north of 70 earlier really put down some snow! None of the models picked up on that. These types of compact, but potent, systems are hard to predict for these models!

A lot of the hi-res models picked up on the I-70 Snow band from late last night and this morning. I saw 5-6" totals but they weren't high enough lol That 18Z NAM'ing wasn't too far off though.

It's here! 1.5" and climbing! Salt truck just went by. I am surprised it came thru already. With the rates I thought it would be much later., KY / and specifically in my case, Boone Co, is on top of it these days. Much improved over the days of my youth.
